How do we find out
What’s
under your feet?
1.Dig
2.Sort
3.Count
4.Measure
What happens next?
Schools across the UK will upload
the data they collect to the Pod for the scientists.
This will be the first time a large
scale study of soil invertebrate abundance across the country has been carried
out.
We will regularly go to the Pod to
look at blogs from the scientists so we can find out how our work is helping
them to understand what is causing bird decline.
What’s Under Your Feet? will provide these SCIENTFIC OUTCOMES for the BTO
1.The
first maps of soil invertebrate abundance across the country, by relating the
data from schools to information about soil-type and climate across the
country.
2.An
understanding of the main factors influencing soil invertebrates – especially
climate and soil-type, which will identify how vulnerable these populations are
to future change.
3.A
scientific paper linking the soil invertebrate data to large-scale variation in
bird populations and trends, and looking at the importance of climate in
driving these trends – because we helped the scientists we be credited in the
paper. So we will be named in a real
scientific paper!
